Stellenbosch

There are more estates here than a day can hold. Pick one road, Helshoogte, the R44, or the Polkadraai side, and leave the others.

Ten names are below. Have dinner in town if you like. Five cellars is how the afternoon disappears.

Open a name for the reason to stop, the map pin, and the estate site. Those notes stay on the vineyard list.

How the day goes

Pick one road and do two or three estates on it. Up the Helshoogte Pass, Tokara and Delaire Graff look back over the valley. North on the R44, Kanonkop and Warwick are neighbours. South toward Somerset West you have Blaauwklippen and Kleine Zalze, and Jordan is out on the Polkadraai side. Spier, Meerlust and Vergenoegd Löw sit on the lower roads toward False Bay.

Before you go

The town itself is worth an hour: Dorp Street, the old buildings around the Braak, and plenty of coffee. The famous estates are busy on weekends, so book the lunch you care about. Ride-hailing is easy in town and patchy on farm roads, so sort out the lift home before the first tasting.
