Paarl

The vineyards sit along the Berg River, not on one pretty street, so a lot of the day is the drive between them.

Fairview and Spice Route share a hill. Count them as one stop with lunch, not two separate appointments.

Open a name for the reason to stop, the map pin, and the estate site. Those notes stay on the vineyard list.

How the day goes

Paarl is about an hour from Cape Town on the N1. Fairview and Spice Route are neighbours on the slopes of Paarl Mountain: goats and cheese at one, chocolate, beer and wine at the other. Laborie is right by town, so it fits at the start or the end of the day without much driving.

Before you go

The granite domes of Paarl Mountain are easy to spot from the N1, and the view from up there is worth an hour if the day has room. Summer is hotter here than in the coastal valleys. Taste in the morning and keep lunch in the shade.
