Hemel-en-Aarde

The valley above Hermanus. People drive it for Pinot and Chardonnay. There and back from Cape Town in one day is a long time in the car.

Stay over if you also want the sea. One tasting, then the town. A second valley doesn't fit.

Open a name for the reason to stop, the map pin, and the estate site. Those notes stay on the vineyard list.

How the day goes

The road climbs out of Hermanus on the R320, and the vineyards are spread along the valley. Hamilton Russell is near the bottom. Creation and Ataraxia are further in. A tasting and lunch at one estate, with a second tasting only if there is time, is a good day here.

Before you go

The cold Atlantic is close, which is why Pinot Noir and Chardonnay do so well. Whale season along Walker Bay runs roughly from June to November, so a winter or spring visit can end on the cliff path in Hermanus. Driving back to Cape Town after dark is the part to avoid.
