Helderberg

This is Somerset West, not Stellenbosch town. Vergelegen is the long lunch. The other two are on the same side of the mountain, a long way from Dorp Street.

Pets come up on two of these vineyards. Phone first. The rule is the estate's, not ours.

Open a name for the reason to stop, the map pin, and the estate site. Those notes stay on the vineyard list.

How the day goes

The estates sit on the slopes of the Helderberg above Somerset West, about 45 minutes from Cape Town on the N2. Vergelegen is the big one, with old gardens, a historic homestead and a long lunch. Lourensford is just up the road. Morgenster is known for olive oil as much as wine, which suits anyone in the group who isn't tasting.

Before you go

The beaches at Strand and Gordon's Bay are close, so this valley works for a day that mixes a tasting with the sea. Summer brings the southeaster, so ask for an indoor table if the wind is up. If a pet is coming along, check the estate's rules on the day. They do change.
