Elgin

Apple country on the way toward Hermanus. The nights are cooler, which is why people come for Chardonnay and Pinot instead of another Stellenbosch Cabernet.

Two vineyards is plenty. It's a detour, not something you tack on after lunch in Stellenbosch.

Open a name for the reason to stop, the map pin, and the estate site. Those notes stay on the vineyard list.

How the day goes

Elgin is about an hour from Cape Town, over Sir Lowry's Pass on the N2. Paul Cluver is close to the main road and makes an easy first stop. Iona is further into the hills, so give yourself time for the drive and don't plan a tight connection after it.

Before you go

The valley is higher and cooler than Stellenbosch. Pack a layer even if town was warm. The farm stalls along the N2 sell the apples Elgin is famous for, which is a better snack for the driver than another glass. Hermanus is under an hour further on, if you are making a weekend of it.
