A short history

Willem Adriaan van der Stel, Simon's son, founded Vergelegen on 1 February 1700. The name means situated far away: the ox-wagon from the Castle took days. He planted vines, orchards, oaks, and the camphor trees that still stand on the lawn.

In 1706 he was ordered back to the Netherlands, and the estate was broken up. The trees and a long lunch are the visit. It is a real drive from Stellenbosch town.
