Tulbagh
A bowl of mountains, and fewer vineyards than the famous valleys. Once you've driven in, two stops is the day.
Cap Classique at Krone, reds in town at Saronsberg. Then the road home.
Open a name for the reason to stop, the map pin, and the estate site. Those notes stay on the vineyard list.
How the day goes
Tulbagh is around an hour and a half from Cape Town, through the Nuwekloof Pass. Church Street in the village is a row of Cape Dutch houses, restored after the 1969 earthquake, and it is a good place for lunch. Krone is at the Twee Jonge Gezellen farm just outside the village, and Saronsberg is close by.
Before you go
The mountains around the valley catch snow in a cold winter, and summer is hot. Two tastings and a slow lunch is the right size for the day. Leave before dark, since the pass is the way home.
