Swartland
Wheatlands and Riebeek-Kasteel. The map makes it look close to Stellenbosch. The drive, and the pace of the afternoon, say otherwise.
Chenin and Rhône-style reds are what the valley is known for. Phone ahead if the visit is a working cellar rather than a restaurant.
Open a name for the reason to stop, the map pin, and the estate site. Those notes stay on the vineyard list.
How the day goes
Riebeek-Kasteel and Riebeek West are the base, a little over an hour north of Cape Town. Kloovenburg sits just outside Riebeek-Kasteel and sells olives as well as wine. AA Badenhorst is out on the Paardeberg, on a farm that still feels like a farm. Phone the smaller cellars before you drive.
Before you go
Summer is hot, and the wheat turns gold. In a good rainy year, September brings wildflowers along the roadsides. The Riebeek villages have small restaurants and galleries, so lunch in town is a fair plan between tastings.
