Ten estates, and what you are actually going for. This is not a league table.
Stellenbosch has more estates than a day can hold. These ten are ones people actually detour for. The oaks and the gables are real. The order is just a way to read the page.
If you only have one afternoon, pick two of these on the same road.
Perched on the crest of the Helshoogte Pass, Delaire Graff looks back over Stellenbosch. The cellar, the restaurant, and the art collection share the hill. Go for the Bordeaux-style blends and the Chardonnay.
Tokara's striking modern architecture and elevated position on Helshoogte Pass provide spectacular views. Their range includes excellent Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and red blends. The restaurant serves contemporary cuisine with stunning mountain and valley views.
Waterford is renowned for its commitment to quality and innovation. Their chocolate and wine pairing is legendary, and their flagship wine, The Jem, consistently ranks among South Africa's finest. The estate offers various tasting experiences, from traditional tastings to the unique "Wine Safari."
Situated in the cooler Stellenbosch Kloof area, Jordan produces elegant, food-friendly wines. Their Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are particularly noteworthy. The estate features a beautiful restaurant, bakery, and deli, making it perfect for a full day visit.
Rust en Vrede focuses exclusively on premium red wines and has been doing so since 1694. Their Estate wine is a benchmark Bordeaux blend, and the on-site restaurant holds a Michelin star. This is a destination for serious red wine enthusiasts.
Spier is one of Stellenbosch's oldest estates and a pioneer in sustainable winemaking. It's perfect for families, with a cheetah outreach program, eagle encounters, and picnic areas. The estate produces a wide range of accessible, quality wines.
High on the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain, Thelema produces wines of exceptional quality and consistency. Their Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are legendary. The views from the tasting room are as impressive as the wines themselves.
Founded in 1692, Lanzerac is steeped in history. The manor house has been converted into a luxury hotel, and the estate produces excellent Pinotage and red blends. The setting under ancient oaks is quintessentially Stellenbosch.
Beyerskloof is synonymous with Pinotage, South Africa's signature grape variety. Winemaker Beyers Truter has elevated Pinotage to international acclaim. The tasting room is welcoming and unpretentious, focusing squarely on the wines.
Kanonkop is the estate people mean when they talk about old Stellenbosch Pinotage. The Paul Sauer blend is the other bottle to ask for.
