Steenberg

Watercolour of the Constantia valley.
Illustration of the Constantia valley. Not a photograph of this estate.

The southern end of Constantia, with a hotel on the estate. Sauvignon is the bottle to ask about. Still close enough to be back in town for dinner.

A short history

Catharina Ras was already farming under the Steenberg when Commissioner van Rheede visited in 1685. In 1688 the grant was put in her own name. She called the farm Zwaaneweide, the feeding place of swans.

In 1695 she sold it to Frederik Russouw. The hotel is the reason some people stay the night. Sauvignon is the bottle to ask about.
